If I remove bio balls what do I do with return plate

The return plate from the tank to wetdry is black. If I remove all my bio balls and want to put sand and live rock in the sump, what do I do with the black plate that also has a little shelf for media before it trickles to bio balls. Also it prevents me from adding a light source. Here is a picture. Thanks

Sand is one thing, but you don't want to put rock in there.Detritus will build up in the rocks, rocks are as bad as bio-balls.You either just throw a heater and small skimmer in or you do what I did buy a sump that will fit your needs.I had the Eshopps WD75 wet-dry and went to the Eshopps RS200,so I could put a decent skimmer in it.Welcome to Reefland.
