Refuge/Skimmer combo unit worth checking out?

This product looks like something I might put on my tank. Anybody have any opinions on this product? Seems like it could work. It comes with a pump, but I am planning on upgrading the pump to optimize the skimmer function. I know it's not top of the line, but for $100 it may be worth trying out. What do you think?
    Thanx for any input..

First you'll have to buy a light for it(no biggie) Second the skimmer is probably junk, but don't let that discourage you from getting it. It's a cheap start to a refuge, it might not be the proper size for your tank but it all helps. How big is your tank? Do you have a skimmer now?

Re: Refuge/Skimmer combo unit worth checking out?

Hey, thanks for the reply. My tank is a 55 gal. FOWLR right now and I've never had a skimmer to this day. Yeah... I'm not expecting the skimmer to be that great at all, but the small fuge is intriguing (nice little place to put some chaeto). I read somewhere that most skimmers use the same mechanism and using a good pump/powerhead can make a difference in performance. Any idea of what makes one skimmer better than the other? Is it the quality of the materials or do the skimmers actually have different mechanisms of action?

    tanks,

    Joe,

I really don't know what makes them better or worse, but I can tell you which ones not to buy. There's a bunch of junk out there!! I've heard that it's a mix between pump/tiny bubbles/reaction chamer. I do know that the skimmer on that refuge is to small for a 55. Hopefully someone will see this post and give you an answer. But I'm with you on it being a nice place for chaeto.

I have this one on a 29 gal tank. Pro Series HOB Systems Seems to work well. There is also this one. Reef Aquarium Filtration: EcoSystem Pro Series Hang on Back Wet/Dry Filter System Which is bacically the same thing. The one you have found is the same design, but for $70.00 I would have to question the quality of it. The two I have posted here are of very fine quality. Both run on Rio pumps and have CRP skimmers built in. They also both include the required light fixture. But then again for 70 bucks it may be worth a go at it. Like I said, mine works quite well but was more around $300.

    Chasman.
