Please tell me info about this fan (don't know much about electronics)

How do I power it?

Is that a good fan? I only have a 7 AGA BOW and I would like to know if that would cool it effectively if I put it on the back egde pointing at the Power filter output?


Or is this a better one?

CFM is Cubic Feet per Minute. It is a measurement of how much air the fan moves.

Both fans would need to be wired into a plug and then plugged into the wall socket.

Ball bearing fans are usually quieter than sleeve bearing fans, but you want to find out what the Db is if you can. The lower Db number the more quiet.

Metal housings also will be a concern, as the metal will be exposed to salt water spray. You will want to find out what sort of metal they are using, and avoid copper/brass, and iron. Nickel (or zinc) plated or stainless steel are typically better if you are going with a harsh environment.

The first fan will also use considerably less 'lectricty and would be fine for a 7 gal tank

I have some of the Hosfelt fans and they are LOUD. Sounds like a airport if I run all 4 at one time. They were the low noise models, pushing 115cfm. They work great but are loud. IC varible speeds would be nice except for the price.

I just bought 2 of the Hosfelt fans also. And like LTSPD said they are LOUD. I wired one and turned it on and my wife, in the other room, said boy is that loud or what? I am going to put one on my prop tank and have it come on and off with the lights...which means it won't be on much while anyone is home.

Thanks guys I think I understand everything now. I will prolly get the 10 CFM one, do you think that is enuff? The price is right I know that, probably 15 bucks total...

I just don't know how much 10 CFM is and I don't know if it is enuff...Next one up is 32 CFM should I get that?

hmmmm.... I ordered two of these fans also from Hosfelt a few days ago. Wish i would have read this thread beforehand . . LOL. Anyone know of some quieter 4" fans ?

10 CFM is not alot. The IC's run up to 100+ cfm if need be. I would think you would need a bit more cfm turnover on a light hood.

That is what I was thinking Ltspd, actually it is just to cool the water down...i'm gonna be pointing it at the power filter output on my 7g...

I saw where you mentioned the purpose, sorry.
I would say the first one with ball bearings. The noise level should be low due to the lower rpm and the fact of ball bearings. The diffrence between ball and sleeve are the contact points. Ball's have much smaller contact points even though there are a lot of them around the shaft. The sleeve bearing is more than likely a brass or bronze sleeve that the fan shaft rotates inside of.

Why is tank in need of a fan? and how hot is it? The smaller size fan should be fine for you but if you need major cool down then first you need to find what is putting so much heat into the tank.

Thanks everyone...My tank gets up to about 87 during the day at this temp I can visually see that my corals don't like it (they close up) and then it drops to 80 during the night...so, I would like to lesson this big difference. I've tried moving the lights up but then I cut down the light entering my tank considerably, so I thought I'd try a fan.

So, the 10 CFM one is enuff then? I think it would be enough. I haven't oredered it yet so I can still change my mind...

Hi there mastaJ! I would have to agree that 10 CFM is not sufficient for the type of cooling you are looking for. Your tank gets pretty hot. I'd go with a higher CFM. FWIW, those Hosfelt fans are loud. I have two. But they do the trick. As soon as I can afford IC fans, I think I'll try them out. They are supposed to be quiet. But, again, expensive. HTH
