    water noise

i'm starting a new tank and i'm fairly new to this overflow design. i failed completely at making an over flow box to drain into my sump so i decided just to drill out the back of the tank and attach some PVC tubing to flow into the sump. The only issue i've discovered so far with it is the "water fall" sound as it exits the tank and flows down the tubes and into the sump.

Anyone have any cool suggestions on ways to baffle the water noise? Also right now there is nothing in the sump. i need to add the protein skimmer and all that jazz.

i attached a few pics, so maybe u can get an idea of my setup.

It's a straight run down? Does it extend into the water in the sump? Or does the PVC stop before reaching the water?

Do you have a plan for mechanical filtration? Sponge filter, filter pad(s), etc?

Have you scoured this website yet?

ya its a straight run down and the pvc does go below the water line. the noise is basically from the water rushing down the pipe.. maybe a couple of bends will help? figured i'd ask before i start cutting up more stuff.

the only mechanical device i planned on putting in was a protein skimmer.

no i haven't checked out that site yet.. i'll take a look though. unfortunately my base doesn't have much room down there for a lot of equipment.

I was thinking the same, as long as the extra turns do not restrict flow too much. If the pieces fit snugly, you might be able to test them without gluing them permanently. Or a little teflon tape could make them fit snug for testing.

Or if you have 1 inch tubing, that might be quieter than the PVC.

    Good luck.
