Guys,
I am a welder. Golfish is right the Co2 used for welding is very high quality and like he said a better grade than anything out there. However- our welders run on a mix of CO2 and argon but the mixing is done on location. If anything other than what we need comes out of the gas line most likely the weld will be screwed up. I also know if we got any chips in our welds it would show up in the X-rays when our welds are checked. Our welds are so sensitive that anything riding in on the gas would cause problems and we would find a new dealer. As a matter of fact our gas supplier keeps a guy on site in case something is screwed up. Sorry, you could guzzle down a gram of metal chips with your beer and not know it but you put those chips in one of our seam welds and they will be found-- so don't think gas for a welding shop is not as good as a beverage shop. |

thanks for that info iron crab...so i guess its just the places i fill at(paintball shop/feild)
i wasnt trying to bad mouth welders or anything just passing on my exp. with co2,and it just seemed likely.anyway, dirty co2 is for REAL(stay away from paintball shops...i guess).i would be at least a little selective about where it comes from. |

organicreefer, I must be blind
Where did you say "i agree the metal chips dont have anything to do with the "quality"(wasnt even aware there were different grades) of the co2." You said that you had already stated this. I don't see it. I see where you said "i would think a beverage grade would be preferable(welding shop sounds dirtier than a paintball shop)." Trust me on this one. The plant I work at is the dirtiest place I have ever seen. Most of these bottles are filled right off the truck, regardless if its welding or bevarage. How dirty the shop is or what they sell doesn't matter. The bottles are most likly filled outside and its not like anything can get in the bottle once its filled. I can see how chips MIGHT get in the bottles from screwing and unscrewing the connectors..... Mark |

This is probably a local issue. The CO2 bottles are filled by a tanker truck regardless of there uses, welding or bevarage. We don't use any screens and I don't recall drinking matal chips in my sodas.

organicreefer, I never felt you were bad mouthing welders. I couldn't get on the net yesterday but I did mention your chip problem to the guys on my weld team and they all cringed. When you spend half the day preparing material to get a perfect weld then hear about some one getting chips in their gas will do that. Their feelings on this is that either your tank had stuff in it when it was filled or you have a dealer problem. Yep, if your gauges are dirty when you screw them in will cause the problem too. I always figured that a good dealer will filter the gas out while filling your tank.

yeah its probly just the places i (and ALL the other paintballers i know) fill at.at the feilds its outdoors, dirty and windy ,and at the paintball shop they are always modifying/building guns, hence the metal chips
,i just figured a welding enviroment would be really dirty too,i didnt know the welds were so sensitive but it makes sense. let me be very clear and say it doesnt happen everytime i refill but it happens often enough that i(and all the exp. players i know) need to filter it before it enters my rediculously expensive gun.ill be getting my co2 somewhere else when i get a reactor. |
