Post Not just another redundant skimmer question.

So it has been a very long time since I was last on the forum, so hello all ":eek3:". Without further ado, I have put much time into much research on many subjects and this one is a toss, can you skim to much? I know that with skimming you remove much unwanted organic waste, but I also know that you remove things that are found to be "beneficial" to the tank. At the moment I have a very well established 55 long with a 10g fuge inline with my wet/dry "I wanted mechanical and biological filtration" main tank has near 75+/-lbs live rock and +/-15lbs in the fuge with live sand, a array of different plants and macro algae. I have a skimmer now that is rated for a 65g, but I do not feel that it is holding up very well, I was looking into a (Coralife super skimmer 125 or 220) hence numerical rating for the gallons of water. I am very intrigued by the needle-wheel "technology" but do not want to go over kill, I am way stocked on coral, snail, hermits, and only have 3 fish "engi goby, and a mated pair of chromis". I do not believe that the 125 would do any harm, but I would just like to get some input on my new purchase.

You can't over skim a reef tank, have no idea where that term came from. What I mean by this is as long as you are not running your skimmer too wet it won't take out that much good stuff (water with trace elements and your additives) There is no proven evidence that running wet or dry makes a difference. I prefer semi-dry myself, you also can't over skim by having a skimmer rated for a lot more than your total system water volume. I have a alpha 170 cone skimmer rated for 40-200 gallons on my 50 with a total system water volume of 55 gallons and that is with a separate 25g sump and 12g fuge. My tank is doing fine and my corals are growing almost faster than I want them too.
