Lightbulb Newbie in Need of Overflow answer

So...basically... my HOB overflow box needs to be able to handle a higher flow rate than what my return pump provides. Is this correct?

I'm in the process of planning and window shopping. I have a 125 gallon acrylic that has not been drilled. Would I be better off drilling?

Anyone that can answer these questions...would be forever awesome in my book. Thanks in advance!!!

    1. No, your return pump needs to have a little faster GPH than your overflow, then you install a ball valve right after the return pump to regulate it. This way you can get the maximum flow from your overflow. You can go with a pump that has less GPH than your overflow, but you will not make full use of your overflow. Also when picking pump size, don't forget about head pressure.

    2. Drilling your tank is the best option, it won't lose its siphon like a standard overflow can.
