Wet/dry filters have no place in a reef tank system, the bio-balls eventually become a big nitrate factory.

Cannister filters are also largely unnecessary and will also cause nitrate problems if not cleaned meticulously.

Refugiums are for growing beneficial algae (ie:cheato) for purposes of excess nutrient export and also harbor other life-forms beneficial to the rest of the system.

Re: Whats the best filtration method?

The best filtration is biological, chemical and mechanical!
Protein skimmer, carbon/phosphate reactor, live sand and rock!
Filter feeders such as Tridacna Clams, Sponges, Tunicates, Feather Dusters, Flame Scallops, Porcelain/Anemone Crabs.
Water changes are also a great means of removing or reducing all sorts of dissolved Organics, particulate matter, dissolved carbon dioxide, nitrates, phosphates, tannins and toxins.
