looks like your list is a good start. just make sure you research compatible fish so you dont learn the hard way. Good Luck!![]()
Hey y'all I've decided to take the plunge from diving to bringing my love home.
I've decided to start my own FOWLR tank and keep it a fowlr for about half a year to a year to get some xp and get the tank lined up.
Equipment:
55gal tank with custom built stand.
2 filters both marineland pengiun 150 and 200 both together are rated to do over 75gal I think. In the works of building a sump or maybe fuge.
Heater 200w fluval, 150w marineland stealth.
Lighting marineland double bright LED.
Currently no protein skimmer looking at building one.
50lb LR, 40lb LS
I'm sure I'm forgetting something seeing as I'm new. If anyone has any suggestions or advice or wants to call me a n00b I welcome it. I need all the advice I can get. I've been looking into the hobby for the past year reviewing my budget and have decided I can afford it. Or so I believe. I'm taking my LFS advice and taking it slow. But really. Any advice is great. I hope to have my LR cycling by next week. And have my tank setup before I start back at University in 7 weeks.

+1 Twisty, research your fish, that is going to be vital, keep in mind when selecting your livestock that you pay very close attention to there adult size and swimming requirements, e.g. 99% of all Tangs belong in a 75 or larger system, preferrably at least a 125, they need room to roam, if you can, the price difference isn't all that different between the 55 and 75 I would go with a 75 gallon, I own a 55 as a reef and believe me space is limited, very limited the 12" depth is a b#$%%

The only reason why I'm not getting a 75 or bigger is due to the fact that I'm crashing at my moms house this year while attending university. My beedroom isn't exactly huge. And for $50 for a tank I think I can work a few hrs when I move out to grow. She really wants me to get a 35 but they have about the same foot print so I was like why don't I get the 55 tall. Also she wants. Bi-color angel.
Stocking ideas: cleaner crew, 2 maroon gold strips clowns, 1 dwarf lion, 1 bi-color.
Welcome to the hobby!
I don't know what you plan on getting for a clean up crew, but keep in mind the lion fish will eat any shrimp, small fish, and probably hermit crabs. Also just because your "new" and i haven't seen anyone say anything about it, remember that your tank is going to cycle when you set it up.
And this is just my 2 cents, get yourself a six line wrasse, they are cheap, easy to find, hearty as hell, eat anything you feed them, and very colorful, out of everything i have, i still think my six line is my favorite. =)
55 Gallon Reef Tank: 50lbs live rock, 50lbs live sand, 216 watt t5 lighting, 2 power heads, red sea prizm skimmer, CPR backpack skimmer modded into a mini sump.
20 gallon fish only
10 gallon mantis shrimp tank
