marineland 75 gal reef ready setup issues

let the fun begin boght a 75gal reef ready marine land tank that came with the plumbing kit. set it all up filled it started the pump. cant seem to fill the overflow chamber high enough to get rid of the sucking noise. one thing i did notice the return head that goto into the tank seem to be leaking back in the overflow chamber. draind the overflow chamber removed the the fittting and retaped with teflon put it back in and still leaking. didnt know if this would cause the overflow not to fill all the way. have a sicce 4.0 with 5 ft of vetical lift and 3 feet horizontal trave with three elbows and dialed down a couple notches to keep water levels the same. any ideas ?

There are some elaborate ways to silence an overflow. I put a small piece of cement board over the top of mine.... works ok. If the overflow fills enough to get rid of the sucking noise entirely, I think you'll find that you're going to overflow the tank. My tank is less noisy with less flow from the return pump. As far as the leak in the overflow, you need to make sure you have teflon on both sides of the bulkhead, assuming the bulkhead isn't cemented into place on one side. Make sure you don't overtighten the fittings - this will ruin them; if you're using a wrench to tighten, you're overtightening. The same goes for the sump tank, get teflon on both sides of the bulkhead. I made that mistake when setting up my sump. It leaked quite a bit, so I had to drain the sump and take the bulkhead out and redo it. Thankfully, I did a freshwater check of the tank and how water tight it all was first, before I added the salt.

thxs fo the advice went ahead and picked up a proflex 3 sump much better on drain noise draind the overflow compartment and swapped out the bulk head look like the threads were stripped. this is my first predrilled tank and it came with the drains and returns. went with the aqueon kit and it worked like a charm

A new sump is another way to do it I guess. I didn't notice the tank was predrilled, I thought you were talking about a hang on overflow because they're a bit more notorious for being noisy. It makes more sense now.
