    pump advice

Has anyone had experience with guiet one pumps running a sicce 4.0 and gettinitg a lound hum. Also its a to much for my corner overflow running at its lowest setting. Didnt know if the sicce can hamdle back pressure from a ball valve. The guiet one 3000 would give me just under 680 at the tank without extra plumbing

Everybody swears by Magdrives. I've seen them in other people's tanks and they seem pretty quiet to me. The Lifeguard pumps are supposed to be hit and miss. Sometimes they're real quiet, sometimes they're not. I use a Blue Line external pump and it barely makes a sound. I also use a RIO 2100 for my skimmer and it's makes some noise, but not what I would call too much (the venturi is far louder).
Have you tried anything to alleviate the noise from the Sicce? I put cardboard under my external pump to eliminate humming. The RIO is held down pretty good with the tubing from the skimmer. If you hold the Sicce up while its running does the noise go away? If it does, buy a couple of washcloths and stick them underneath it and see if that doesn't stop the noise.

About the back pressure, I can't imagine that it would be a problem, just make sure the ball or gate valve, (I have a ball valve, I should have gotten a gate valve) is on the outflow of the pump.

    Re: pump advice

I have a Mag and it can get pretty noisy too. From what I've heard, Eheim are the quietest and least troublesome.

If you are returning through hard line, alot of times that amplifies the humming. Try to use a short section of flexible tubing between the pump outlet and the PVC, that usually helps to dampen the humming quite a bit. Using a valve to throttle back is fine, but it works best when you plumb in a recirculation tee...ball valves have less chance of developing leaks than gate valves.
