    Nano Reef Lighting Question

    Greetings,

I just found this forum and have already learned so much. I am a new to the hobby, but have grown up enjoying my father's large reef tanks. I have a small nano reef tank of roughly 20 gallons. The most important question I have pertains to hairy green algae. I have not done a whole lot with the tank other than a couple water changes. I was away for a week and came home to an infestation of green hairy algae. I have 5 small snails, two small crabs, and 5 or so really small crabs. I wish I knew the names of the species, but I don't. I will be more cognizant of learning these details from here on out. Prior to the algae infestation, I did have two turbos, but both have died. I read that zebra stripe turbos may help. Given the size of the tank, I'm not sure if I can add anything else. Any ideas?

Lastly, the tank was used when I got it from my brother. The lighting and fans are pretty loud and I was curious if I can replace the whole top unit which includes the lights, buttons, and fan?

    Thanks,

    John

Probably a good idea to change th eunit, because of age. Also, Green Hair Algae is due mostly because of Phosphates. Turbo Snails and Emerald Crabs will help, the more the merrier. And you can but don't have to, use a phosphate reactor. Are you looking for help in defining what lighting you have? Or need? Or??

So you have one of these?

I believe that you have 2 Compact Flourescent Lights in there.
Here are lights you can use. Or do you want to replace the unit with an exact hood?

    Re: Nano Reef Lighting Question

The hoods don't look exactly the same, but I bet they would fit fine. Ideally, since I will be putting more soft corals in the tank, one of the sun pods would be pretty neat and may help. I'm not sure I can do this though. I need the owners manual from my brother.

Are there any credible online fish stores? I was thinking about ordering some crabs and zebra snails.

    Thanks,

    John

    Re: Nano Reef Lighting Question

I actually think the tank is 12 gallons. I am guessing that this leaves me with replacing the entire hood and the sun pod is not an option.
