could you please share what you had in mind for the tank? are you thinking reef, fish only? there are a lot of options for filtration, and a lot of different aproaches to it. it would help if we knew what you were trying to do with your new tank?

Re: will be looking at getting a 35 gal hex aqarium

there are two considerations for filters, mechanical and biological. using things like filter pads, carbon and other media to trap or absorb contamination is one way of doing it. another is to allow bacteria to build up in the gravel, on decorations and on media of some sort is another way a tank filters. most use a combination of those two. a canister is great because you can hide it under the stand. it can cover both types of filtration, but is harder to service. in my experience the harder the task is, the less likely someone is to do it. if you are the type that enjoys the hobby and taking the time, i believe a canister would be great for you. if you are one that will likely put off maintenance, the simpler the better. in that case a box filter hanging on the back is best. they have simple filter packs that you can change easily.

in my experience the filter you use ultimately isnt all that important. no matter which one you use, it will deal with waste. that waste ultimately needs removed by water changes. it is the maintenance on the tank that determines how well it does. doing regular water changes is more important than they type of filter you put on it.
