    Bio-Media

I recently bought the "Rapids Pro Filter Model RP3 by TOM Aquarium Products"(Aquarium Kits, Aquarium Care Products, Freshwater & Saltwater Aquarium Kits, Power Heads - Tom Aquarium Products). Amazing product, it has a protein skimmer built right into the main filter box. On top of that it has 3 seperate media filter compartments in the filter box. The top compartment holds 2 mesh or sponge like pads(1 carbon and 1 just a white pad). The middle compartment only holds blue bio-balls. The bottom compartment has two filter bags...1 holds activated carbon and 1 holds these white plastic pieces that look like short thin pieces of pvc pipe. It says they are "Sintered Glass Bio-Cylinders". My questions is what exactly are the bio-balls and the Sintered Glass Bio-Cylinders and what do they do?

Grow bacteria to aid in the clean up of the water. But, these same things will collect garbage in them and hold them, that will also cause you Nitrate problems. You need to keep an eye on them, make sure they do not collect to much on them, and therfore cause you water quality issues. They can aid in water quality, but they can also give you a headache.
