Rio powerhead just stoped working, what can I replace it with?

last night, the rio on my bakpakII stopped dead, I tryed to see if it was clogged, and found that the case itself wasnt held together very good, so i just cleaned it out and left it on my counter. what power head can replace it? I tryed my aquaclear 402, but instead of blowing air in, it was shooting water out of the venturi... I think I will have to buy a maxi jet, to replace the aquaclear, and try again using an air pump instead of the venturi. I think my tank can go skimmerless for a few days, but i wish i didnt have to, especially without a refugium...

You could replace it with a Maxi-Jet 1200 and a venturi kit. You could also shoot an e-mail to this guy and ask him:

rio's can be fiked easily by taking them apart and cleaning the shaft the the prop is on... calcium builds up on the shafts causing it to freeze.

you sure it's broke?

Try cleaning the insides Or, you may have to replace the impeller.

Its not really broke, infact it pumps water fine, but as soon as I hook the venturi up to intake air, it shoots out way too much air (even if I adjust the air intake.) and some of the air shoots backwards into my rock work. I did try cleaning it, but When I went to open it up, I found the outer casing was cracked and loosely fitting, there was no way to clean it that way without breaking it more. So I just cleaned the impellor off from the opening, and that works fine now... I just can not get it to not shoot out alot of air.

why dont you just put a close valve on the venturi line? that way you can close and open it till you get the right amount of air?... as far as i know the more air the better!

I use an air valve. Well, I lost the valve, and now it just runs wide open. On an Amiracle SL5

I have one! it doesnt work! I am going to use an air pump, but at this time only have a POS one... I even tied a knot in the air hoes, this limited the amount of air greatly, but all of the air that is pumped into the skimmer, goes right into the skimmer chamber, around the baffles and out of the outlet before it even has a chance to form a foam! I cant figure it out!
