Hi Sebastian,
Yes. However, here is the downside to just using DI on tap: depending on the water quality coming from the water plant and the contaminants it picks up in the pipes along the way will determine how quickly the resins become exhausted. This can be costly in the longrun. Are you considering the tap water purifier? You may want to do a search for DI and tapwater and see what other's had to say about it.

Hi Sebastian!

DI water is great for make up water. However as stated above, the cartridges can become saturated quickly and need frequent replacement. If this is the only purification you can get for now, go for it. Down the road you can purchase a small RO unit and run the DI unit after. In the long run, the cost of the small RO unit will be saved since it increases the capacity of the DI cartridge.

Don't most RO units waste alot of the water, or do they export 100% of the water that comes into them? This is what I've been told/read, and with the price of water in my area it would cost me more to run a RO unit compared to just changing the DI carts.

Yes, RO units waste 3 gallons of water for every good gallon it makes.

Hi eses!

Steve is correct. RO units do produce a lot of waste water that doens't have a lot of uses. You might try doing a search on waste water. I have read some unique ideas regarding uses for the waste water.

Scott

P.S. Moving to the Equipment Forum.

hello,

hey
Steve and Reefland,

is it a possibility to run my RO waste water though another RO and thereby reduce some of the waste?

TIA

I don't think there would be much benefit. Obviously, the waste water is the most saturated, at an even higher concentration than your tap water. If the extra RO unit was able to filter the water clean, your cartridges life would be significantly reduced.

In addition to Scott's point, I doubt you'd be able to get enough water pressure on the waste line of your first RO unit to push it through the membrane of a second one. They need pretty decent water pressure to work well.

I use my waste water to water my trees and plants with. As dry as the summer here has been, I would be watering anyway, so using waste water for my plants is a perfect use for it. I even talked my local water company into giving me a discount on my water bill.
