Basic Sump Question

Hi everone,

I have a brand new 90g AGA RR sitting on my porch and I need to make a decision on the sump I will be using for this tank.

I am using a AGA pine stand that has limited space. Will a 20g tank be big enough to use as a sump? BTW, a 30 long seems to big and a 29g seems to high.

So will a 20 work?

Thanks!

That's what I am thinking about now. Not sure what skimmer I will use at this point. I just want to be sure I have full access to everything.

Thanks!

Ace, I am using a 20 gal sump on a tank the same size as yours. After installing several baffles to control the bubbles, I didn't have room for an in sump skimmer so I had to go with a hangon (Remora pro). It works just fine. Good luck.

That's what I was worried about. I think I am going to try to squeeze a 30 long in the cabinet.

The bigger the better. I wish I had gotten a bigger sump. Once you put a skimmer in there and heaters you will surely want to add something else and then no room. JMO

I have a 30 long under my 55 and you will want bigger then a 20, believe me. If your going to have a refugium you will want it as big as possible. Also, a larger sump will allow for things you want later like reactors, probes etc.

Thanks for all the recommendations!

I am picking up a 30g today. My bulkheads and other accessories are going to delivered today and I am getting anxious to get this thing running.

My concern now is how I am going to partition the tank. There are so many opinions on this it's hard to decide which way to go.

keep it simple here are my setup pics. I dont use any type of baffle configuration, just keep the water high enough and there will not be bubbles.

Hi chromis,

I checked out your sump. looks good, but I think I will have the baffles a little lower.

I have decided to do this:

I may add a second baffle before the pump. I am a little worried about the pump running dry in the event the drain cloggs.

It was suggested to me that I may need to add a float switch to stop this from occuring.

Is there another way to prevent this from happening?
