Pump Me Up

Our 65 gallon is almost ready to go!!
Just onre thing, the pump. I have about 5 inches of width and 14 inches of length in the stand due to sump. What pump does anyone recommend that can put out between 900-1100gph. We have an ecosystem setup for this tank and that the recommended flow. Also have 3 Maxi-Jet MP 600 and a wave master pro for current in tank. Would a sea swril on the retun from main pump be over kill?

PLEASE ADVISE

I would recommend a Mag Drive personally , like a 950 or a 1200 . Sen 900's are good also from what I have heard , they have a rather large footprint . The Mag can be used ethier way , submersiable or external and the pack a good punch .

I can't say much about the Sea Swirl Idea as I dont know much about them .

Hi again MROK. You can never go wrong with a Sea Swirl on your return (I plan on getting one or making my own soon).

However, one thing to keep in mind with your return pump is the size of your overflow and how many gph it will handle....if your return pump puts water back in the tank too fast for the overflow to handle, you will have to install a ball valve to choke back the flow on your return pump (otherwise your tank will overflow). If you have a hang-on overflow, they are typically 600 gph...in which case a Mag 7 or Mag 9 would be good and a Mag 12 (which is what I have; but I have a double overflow) would be too much (Mag 12s return approx 900 gph at 4' of head).

There are 3 models of Sea Swirls...you'll want to match it with the gph rating on your return pump. HTH

Oh...and one more thing I forgot to mention on the other post...the ecosystem method I am using (similar to the Leng Sy method you are about to use) is working extremely well. I do not have ANY algea growth!!! So I guess the caulerpa is doing it's job. I didn't want to spend the mega bucks on Ecosystem sump or the Miracle Mud. So I made my own divided sump and used LS and LR in the refugium section instead. It's working great. Good luck with you system!

We were going to build a sump but the cost of cut acrylic around here is pretty high. I live near Ann Arbor Michigan and some things are just real expensive. We only paid 350.00 for the whole set up complete at the LFS. It wasn't to bad. Our LFS is pretty good though. The list was 499.00 for this at most sites on the web so we got a heck of a deal. I am so haooy to hear that your natural method is working well for you too. Keep me posted as I will do the same.

Time to make the doughnuts!!!!!!
