do you guys place any kind of "cushion" under your GLASS tank?

finishing up my stand ,and the "top" (11/8 inch flooring plywood)is not perfectly level with some small dips here and there(you can really only notice it when the tank is sitting on it.i was thinking i could staple some thick cardboard to it so the tank can just "settle in".what do you guys think?

thanks for youre input masta j.i use styrofoam under my acrylic tank,im just not sure what would be better under glass.

i need to figure it out before the weekend so i can get this tank up and going!

I know a lot of people just use that rigid pink styrofoam insulation.

I did exactly as waterloomarc said. They sell the pink insulation in 2'x8' sheets at Home Depot. I used a 3/4" thick piece for my homemade stand. This stuff is very rigid, it doesn't crush down much at all. But it does give enough to allow for imperfections.

I used that thick 1 1/4 inch wide by 3/4 inch deep foam weatherstripping, it has a sticky side that adheres to the stand nicely, then just set the tank on top of the foam. It was cheap and easy.

I use the sheet foam that you put under Pergo and other laminate flooring. Although its only 3/16" thick, it does not compress, and I figure if it’s designed to be walked on, so it should handle anything.

I'm setting up a 180 All-Glass and had the same concerns. I contacted All-Glass to see what they advised. They said not to put anything under the tank. If you put something under the tank there is a possibility that what you put under it will not settle evenly. They advised me to set it on a perfectly leveled stand. These are their words. I did as they advised and my tank cracked after it was set up for a week. From what I have been told- what I did had nothing to do with causing the crack. It was a flaw in the glass. My new tank should be in next week and I will again set it on their stand per their instructions. If this tank cracks I have no idea what to do next. Bill

Iron Crab,

I made the same call and was told the same thing. I have an AGA stand with a 90 and had a 75 on the same stand, I put nothing in between the tank and the stand. No problems, yet. I used to put foam under my tanks but it always bothered me. It seemed kind of wierd to have a flexible substance under a tank. It always bothered me.

always seemed like a glass tank should sit right on the stand to me too.im gonna try to find a smoother top,maybe some a/b ply would be a better choice.thanks again

floor isn't level? They set rigid plastic for floors forget what for but level the stand. I put ceramic tile in my rec room . The floor was leveled tile put in but it still was off 1/8. I used it to level my stand.= Stand is level so is the tank. IMO I would level the stand with something solid.
