MyReef small skimmer in action!

Hi everybody,
I just picked up a small skimmer from Andy aka MyReef and what a quality piece of equipment! I've enclosed a pic of the skimmer on it's third day of operation. I couldn't be happier with it.
Andy is a great guy to work with, as well. I just wanted to let people know that they can feel comfortable ordering from him, and receive quality products at very reasonable prices! Keep up the good work. Incidentally, I am posting this entirely on my own accord, without any affiliation or knowledge by Andy! Are any major mfrs getting nervous, yet???

Looking forward to cleaner water!

Since this is a beckett head skimmer, it does require a strong pump.
I'm currently using a Supreme Mag Drive 1200. I've always had alot of success with Mag Drives in the past. I'll never buy anothe Rio, that's for sure!!!

Great skimmers, The large pump is the only thing that kept me from getting one.

True, these pumps aren't cheap. The LFS wanted $175.00 for the Mag 1200, so of course I ordered it from Jason and Melissa at Premium Aquatics for $89.95 plus shipping! Don't you just love the local shops!!!

Would an Ampmaster 3000 be strong enough to power this and my sump/refugium with a spray bar?

How would you plum it?

Isn't that pump rated for 3000 gph? You could probably use the one pump and plumb most of your entire setup with it. Returns, skimmer, spray bar, you name it! For just the skimmer though, it would be overkill.

My plan is to have an AMP3000 for a closed loop and another one to run my sump/refugium/skimmer.

The Mags cost a lot to run also. Andy said the Amp Master would be fine, you can always tweek it down with a ball valve but that's one expensive pump to run a skimmer. Have you thought about using a Euroreef skimmer?

I haven't really thought about skimmers at all yet, but I need to start. I just thought that since I planed on using the AMP3000 for my sump/refugium, why not incorporate the skimmer too. Since I will have a closed loop with an AMP3000, I don't need a lot of flow through my sump. I had decided on the AMP because of the low cost to run it. Should I reconsider the pump for my sump?

If you have the $$ for 2. And if you like becket skimmers... which I prefer. I would get it. The sump turnover fiqure @ 10x per hour or more refugium 1-3x. The becket can handle all you can give it as long as its say a 30tall or 8" (if short) diameter. With the ampmaster you probally will have the same savings as the euroreef with the sen pump. The ampmaster may use less power but then you will have more skimming imo. Before I bought my skimmer I was able to compare a 8" euro reef and a 6" aerofoamer. i though the aerofoamer did a better job IMO. But Euroreefs still are kick but just ppl like them cuz they save power. I like to use any pump which is hard to do except for becket. And with the amp master besides the inital cost I bet you will accual use less watts but have equal/more skimming. But before you buy your pumps you may want to decide on skimmer first. One thing is if you get a kick butt skimmer from myreef you will offset the cost of the anyother skimmer to add to the pump?? See there alot of options I 'm sure whichever route you take it will still be good. Seems you aren't skimming which IME= doing it 2-3x which cost more in the long run.

I just turned the skimmer on two minutes before the pic was taken. The skimmer is hooked up to my LR curing vat.

Thanks Ted and John. Glad you guys are happy. Not bad for a few days skimming. John...that is nasty looking in your waste collector. Looks like some nasty smelling stuff.

Andy,

You should get a wiff of the air coming out the waste collector .

BTW, I have the needle valve fully open...should I experiment by closing it a little? What exactly should I be looking for when adjusting the needle valve? I don't even know if I should touch it...it's doing such a goob job, it it aint broke then don't fix it

by the looks of the skimmate I don't think i would touch it John. I know the needle valve will raise and lower the water level like opening or closing the gate valve and also make the bubble size different. But by the looks of it, especially since it is on your curing LR, leave it be. Did you put carbon in the waste container top, like we talked about?

Ok, I'll leave the needle valve be then.

No, I haven't put carbon in the waste collector yet. I need to go to the LFS and pic up a few micron bags ASAP so I can stick some carbon in there. I'll probably do that tomorrow. I don't mind the smell too much...has a funky ocean smell to it...just like the Jersey shore . It's turning my fiance's stomach though..lol

I have the medium sized skimmer and it works great. I will try to post a pic of it in action.

Hey John,
Are you from New Jersey??? I am! I don't live down the shore, though. But I've sure spent plenty of crazy summers down there!
