Fluidized Bed Filters?
What do you think? I notice a few lfs in my area using them. I am looking at Lifegaurd model FB 900 for multi-tank fo breeding/growout system, maybe 100 gal sump and 200 gals worth of tens and twenties. Any experiences?

I use one, but it's only on a 29 gal FOWLER. So far, it's worked great. It is really just a type of wet/dry as I see it. I have read if power goes off for some time, the life on the sand dies and somehow poisons your tank. However, I've never had this experience. I originallly purchased it because in the beginning, the tank was to be a fish only with no other type of filtration. Personally, I like it. Thats just my opinion.

I know of no one that uses them. They have no anoxic zones due to the highly oxygenated water flowing through them at high speeds. They are nitrate factories and possibly much better nitrate factories than a wet/dry with bio-balls. The surface area is much higher with the sand than you would get with bio-balls.

I just did an interesting test. At least interesting to me!
I tested for nitrates in my 36 gal Berlin only tank and registered zero nitrates. I then tested my 29 fowler with the fluiidized sand filter and the test nearly went off the chart! However, it's only for fish, so I really don't care, I think! Apparantly, the old timers used them quite a bit with success. At least, so I've read. Seems like they would be ok for a breeding tank, being there would be no live rock to act as a filter. My two cents worth. ![]() |

Yup. They do exactly what they are designed to. They convert ammonia to nitrate.

David: I had the same question. Asked some expets on a different forum. Their answer was..." If I got room in my closet... get one, because that's where it will end up." To echo the words above. They are a nitrate factory. HTH
