It depends on how you plumb them. If you use a 1.5" Y fitting the in turn goes to 2 more 1.5" Y fittings and then at the last point goes to 1" returns I think it wouldn't lose much head pressure.

However if you just go straight out of the pump to a 1.5" pipe with 4 - 1" T's coming off it that will eat up some head making the turn into the 1" pipe. Not a tremendous amount but anytime you narrow it down to 1" it is going to create more friction.

Either way isn't going to be as bad as going straight to a 1" pipe right off the output which reduces water flow 40% per dolphin pumps site.

FWIW, Nathan

Hey Paul,

How's that tank comming together? Any picture updates? Haven't seen you at the BARE meetings, but I guess this tank is keeping you busy. I don't know if you have been following it, but since Reef Science has shut its door we are now meeting in Dublin at Aquatic Reflections. Should make it a bit closer to you for the meetings.

take it easy,

from aqua sea:
Try to keep your exhaust lines plumbed properly for efficiency and performance. This is accomplished by not reducing piping diameter, using sweep fittings or flexible PVC pipe whenever possible, And when plumbing return lines reduce pipe at the last possible point, not at a junction or directly out of the pump.
for every foot of 1" pvc you add like 1.33 feet of head
here is the plumbing page for dolphin http://www.dolphinpumps.com/plumbing.htm
