Is it ok for an acrylic tank to hang over the edge of the stand by 2 inches on each s
I have a 44 inch dresser that I have a tank on. I want to upgrade the tank, but the dresser is only 44 inches long. Is it a big deal to put a 48 inch tank on the dresser? What if i first put a 1 inch piece of plywood 48 long, then the tank on that?
Thanks in advance for the advice. I should add, I won't be buying a new stand so don't offer that oprtion. Basically it is either a 65 gallon (36 X 18 X 24) or a 60 (48 X 15 X 18) Brian

I'm not worried about the dresser holding the weight. My and a friend have sat on it and bounced around. Solid as a rock. It's an older dresser, back when they used to make them with real wood. I'm questioning the tank.

Assuming that your dresser is strong enough to support the weight, as you say it is, then placing a 1" piece of plywood that fully supports the entire bottom of the tank should work just fine. It is very important with acrylic tanks that the entire bottom be supported. Make sure everything is level and you might want to consider using a thin piece of styrofoam between the plywood and the bottom of the tank.
Good luck, Ninong ![]() |

IMO, I wouldnt do it.. Even with a board under it.. I think it would still be to unstable.. One bump and it could tip over.. What size tank do you have on it now?
If anything I would stick with something that fit on top of the dresser with maybe an inch of extra space on all sides..The tank being less the lenght and width of the dresser |

most of the stress is along the seams (sides)
i think you would only be asking for trouble most all tanks are supported along the sides just my 2 cents ![]() |

A 3/4 or 1 inch piece of Ply will be all that is required... although myself I would also add a piece of 3/4 inch ply attached to the back of the dresser as well, for additional shear support and weight distribution.
If the tank was glass... I might say no way. There is a lot of wieght there, but if you use an Acrylic tank, Acrylic is very forgiving and I wouldn't hesitate overlapping the edge (with a plywood panel/underlay).
