Overflows

What is the max flow I can get through the overflows of my AGA 180?

I think its 1200-1500GPH.

600-700 GPH per overflow

I had a document that lists the max capacity of certain RR overflows.

How big are the bulkheads??

I don't have bulkheads yet. I'll have to measure to see what size I need.

BigLar,
Having 1.5" bulkheads will help with GPH but if the overflows can't keep up the bulkheads won't matter. When I got my new tank going the overflows couldn't keep up with the Amp Master. Let me refraze. They could keep up but the water level was up to the glass cross bar. There's nothing worse then seeing a big glass cross bar in the top of the tank. I had to use a dremel tool and cut the teeth longer on the overflows (Mistake) I then found out that there was no way I was going to shove 3000 GPH through my 40 gal sump unless I like the tank full of bubbles........

So, to make a long story duller and shorter I found that all I need is one little overflow that does about a 1000 GPH to feed my sump. I took the AM3000 off the sump and now use a Mag 1200. As you know I use the AM3000 on a closed loop.....

What the measurements of the overflows? 6x6?

BigLar,

If your AGA has 1" drains like mine, then the bottle neck will probably be the slots in the overflow not the drains themselves. I "widened" the slots on my overflows by removing every other "tooth" of the top overflow slots. I'm getting close to 2000gph through my 2 overflows. The drains seem like they can take a little more, but the slots are maxed out. To get any more flow I would have to remove all of the "teeth" and put some sort of barrier like flexible eggcrate on the overflows.

I've spoken to AGA about this and they agree that the overflows were not designed for high flow rates. And the problem is with the slots. Using a Durso standpipe and widening the slots will allow you to get a little bit more than 1000gph through each overflow.

HTH,
Frank

Oh yeah one more thing remove the rubber inserts on the inside top of the overflows. These slow down the flow as well.
