What is a "breeder" tank?
Hi Reefland,
I have read several articles recently in which people mention "breeder" tanks. Is a Breeder tank a regular tank that people breed fish in, or is there somthing speacial about them? Just curious. Thanks

I had a 40 gal. breeder. It was more square (qube) then a regular tank. It also didn't have any cross braces. I realy dont know why they are called breeder tanks though. Maybe one of the old-timers (Ninong
) can enlighten us...also, I think one of the mods will move this thread into the tank forum.![]()

A "breeder" tank is wider than it is tall. Thus, a 30-gal breeder tank is 36"Lx18"Wx12"H vs. a standard 30-gal which measures 36"Lx12"Wx16"H. A 40-gal breeder tank is 36"Lx18"Wx16"H vs. 48"Lx13"Wx16"H for a standard 40-gal long.
A 40-gal breeder tank is an ideal size for a small reeftank for a couple of reasons. First, it is easy to light with standard 36" fixtures, and second, the 18" front-to-back dimension provides more space for aquascaping and open sandbed area. A 30-gal breeder tank might make a good frag propagation tank. Ninong |

Yeah, OK, I've seen those in a lfs where the owner frags and grows out sps. I like them for the reasons that Ninong mentioned, and you get three sides of good viewing.
Thanks
