Smile Hi Brad

Welcome to RL!

Im assuming you are talking about an internal overflow box, not a HOB overflow....if so I would think that it should be about a 3/4" or maybe even 1" bulkhead then you want to build the standpipe a tad bit bigger than the bulkhead i.e. 1" bulkhead & 1.25" standpipe. Im not 100% sure that would be the sizes you need....but you need to know how much flow you want going through your overflow first! and build around that basis. If you want primarily SPS and clams then you will want to push alot more than if you want LPS/softies. If you could try and give as much information as far as inhabitants you want to keep and certain design features taht you are leaning towards then Im sure everyone here could help you come together with an awesome setup. My 220 gal tank has one overflow box the box dimensions are 9" x 9" and there is a 1.5" bulkhead with a 2" stockman standpipe. Naturally you dont need one this big....here is a pic

I am unable to have a internal overflow(no glass shops that will drill it and warrenty it)it will have to be a hangon type.I am keeping softies (colt, athelia, button, carnation, and a devals hand)would like to be able to keep some lps and sps sometime but it will be some time before money will allow for a light upgrade. It will be going to a custom made 30g sump/ref. mix.Need anymore info let me know.

Im sorry schrader...i didnt read the topic good enough! anyway....this will bump this thread back up and maybe you can get some more responses.....I personally dont like Hangon Overflows....but there have been lots of ppl use them w/out any probs. FWIW when i started out on my 90g I had a complete Tidepool Sump and Tidepool hangon Overflow box which was approximately 12"long x 5" wide x 12" deep....as far as GPH flow Im not sure I remember what it would handle but I was putting about 800gph through it, I hated that setup though and will strongly advise against anything w/ the name Tidepool on it....here again this is just my experiences.

You mean you have a 1.5" Bulkhead?....the reason I chose the stockman is because it was more compact....and you need to get pipe that is larger than the bulkhead....i couldnt find for the life of me 1.75" pipe much less the fittings I needed for the stockman....so unless you can find 1.75" then yes I think you should go with the 2"

i think id rather use a 2 inch. everyone says the bigger the better they work. i have a one inch bulkhead in my older tank. alls i used was a one inch pipe. its works but i feel id could work better if i upsize this next tanks stockman.
