Which 4" fan for canopy?

Which 4" fan should I use to mount in my new MH canopy? Seems to me there are several choices:

1) Radio shack carries a decent selection of fans.
2) Icecap makes a 4" standard fan.
3) Icecap also makes a 4" temp. controlled fan.

My criteria for picking are 1) Noise and 2) CFM. Noice being my number 1 concern.

Which fan do you use? Do you like it? Are the IC fans worth the extra $$$?

Thanks,

Rob

The radio shack fan will probally be the quietest of the bunch. I think I was told the IC fans was 53 dB (loud) wide open.

I have 2 ice cap varible speeds and they run very quite. You have to get next to them and listen to here they at all. Just have to clean them off every few mounths to clean off the dust biuldup but you need to that to all fans any way.

I know someone that sells the IC temp controlled fans for $40 delivered. They are brand new and work great! I have two of these fans in my main tank and you can't hear them hardly at all. His email address is cerreta@rocketmail.com. Scott is a nice guy and always answers email quickly. IMO, the Icecap fans are well worth it if the tank is in an area that needs to be quiet. HTH good luck!

Sounds to me like it's not worth the extra cash for an IceCap. I'll just go with a Radio Shack fan. How do you wire 'em up? I assume a fan for use in a computer does not come with a standard plug

Thanks for the info

They may come with a pigtail already wired. If not solder a wires to each terminal and cover with silicone or shrink tubing to protect. Then just wire into power. If its AC I dont think it makes a diffrence which wire goes to what leg, DC is diffrent.

Mark, thats what mine sound like. I have 2 running at the same time. If I turn on all 4, then it sounds like the local airport. Fornutaly I dont need all 4, and I am currently testing how high the water temp rises without the fans now that there is a pc of tempared glass between the hood and water.

When I go to HQI's I am going to have 1 mounted in the top sucking air out of the sapce between the back of the reflector and the hood. I may step down in cfm pull which will drop the noise level.
