RO/DI Warning

Ok I was beating myself up for the past couple weeks on my test that I did with my RO I was reading some Na and Ph in the output of the RO and today I finally Figured it out.....There was NO waste drain off...at least none to really speak of....Im not sure if anyone has the same as me (SpectraPure 15GPD) but my waste line has a very fine tube inside the waste tube....its like a restrictor I have to measure the output of the waste and the output of the clean water and depending on the ratio i have to cut off some of this very fine tube to get it to the right ratio....well the very fine tube was clogged...and I had to take a fine florist wire and ream it out. Now im back up to 45lbs of pressure on my gauge ....jeez that kinda ticked me off! So watch these restrictors if u have them on your RO/DI units.

I use a ball valve in addition to the restrictor. That way I can sort of get the 3 to or 4 to 1 ratio by adjusting the ballvalve.

Now how does the dirty water know to go out the waste

I wish I knew more about the how's and why's of a RO/DI system. Maybe I will ask Bryan at ARS if he can be of some help in the explantion.

RO/DI units

I have never heard of a flow restictor getting clogged. But now that you bring it up it is a wonder more people have not had this problem, maybe they do and not know it.

The waste line is just that, it is a concentrated brine, all the hardness minerals exit the system there. Lime does scale.

The flow restictor is designed for the GPD on the membrane. Modifying the length is changing the system design. If you are doing that monitor your TDS, by shorting it you are going to increase your waste. Also a flow restrictor is very inexpensive, now that you brought this to light, it it probably a good idea to offer folks a new drain line and flow restictor when they change their membrane.

The ball valve method is not bad, but it requires an understanding most people do not have. The tighter you make it, the more scale that will form.

This is a good discussion. Please add any new info to this forum!

PS
If you remove your drain line and restictor and soak them in vinagar this should descale it qiute well, do let me know!
