Neil, I have 2 MAG 18's externally. I just have my sump drilled with a bulkhead and the pump run inline as normal. Good luck.

I've had a Mag 3 running externally on a fresh water tank for a year.
No problems.

Naser,
I agree with the above postings, a MAG pump is rated for external use. It is possible that these pumps may last longer when used submerged because of additional cooling, but this is just an engineer’s SWAG. Regards, Scott Passe
