Neil, I have 2 MAG 18's externally. I just have my sump drilled with a bulkhead and the pump run inline as normal. Good luck.

I've had a Mag 3 running externally on a fresh water tank for a year.
No problems.How can you eat fish at a Red Lobster and then go home to face your tank? THATS COLD!

Naser,
I agree with the above postings, a MAG pump is rated for external use.
It is possible that these pumps may last longer when used submerged because of additional cooling, but this is just an engineer’s SWAG.
