Sump and AMP 3000
How big should the sump be to run an AMP3000?

Hmmmmm, that depends...better yet, how much better would it be to run it on a closed loop.......
Let say your trying to run 2000 gph through the sump with the AM3000....... I would guess you could do it with a 48" long tank, like a 55 or 60 gal.. what do you think Paul? Mark |

I already have 2 AMP3000's. One for a closed loop and another for my sump/refugium. I also have a 90gal tank drilled on the end for a 1.5" bulkhead. I wanted to use the 90 for a refugium and sump with as big of a refugium as possible.

Gotcha, If your going to set up a refugium then you want low flow for that. I would shoot for around 1000 gph (even that's too much) If your using a skimmer down there then your going to want 1000 gph or more. That should be enough to give the skimmer a good shot at doing its job. I just depends on how you set it up....
You need a little more then 1000 gph for the skimmer but you really don't need that high flow for the refugium. Are you going to seperate the refugium from the rest of the sump? Mark |

I had planned on having the first section be the refugium, the next the sump, and then baffles at the end for bubbles. One overflow draining into the sump and the other split between the refugium and the sump. I would use a ball valve to provide low flow to the refugium and higher to the sump. The pump will be split between a MyReef MR-3 and a spray bar in the main tank. My only concern was the sump area being to small and there being a lot of bubbles in the main tank.

I would just hook it up and play with it. Your plan sounds real good to me.
