What the difference between a gate valve and a ball valve?

Gate valve has a panel that slides down over the opening constricting and finally eliminating flow though.
A ball valve has a ball with a hole in the middle that rotates to constrict and eliminate flow.
IMO gate valves offer better fine adjustment and control of the water than do Ball valves.
Gate valves in my area are also about twice as expensive.
Play well

I agree with Mark. gate valves are better. It really depends on what situation you are needing the valve for. If you want to just shut something off then use a ball valve, if you want to fine tune a pump to get different outputs, then use the gate valve.
hello
andy i want to know that if i my application is to use cryogenic pump which is mounted on cryogenic semitrailor and in suction line of pump i have to two options wether to use gate valve or to used globe valve then which one will be better and more economical reliable from operation point of view as working temp; of pump is -196 deg celcious for liquid nitrogen...

Hi kithocean,
I don't know if you realize this or not but this is an American reefkeeping bulletin board for marine aquarium hobbyists, and this thread is eight years old.
I doubt that any of us are running anything colder than +28 degrees C through our valves and it's saltwater, not liquid nitrogen.
P.S. -- Andy is definitely not around.
