Cleaning Powerheads

Hi All,
The powerhead on my skimmer is starting to get covered with crud, and also coraline algae. Which is starting to hinder the amount of bubbles produced.
If I remember correctly I could use vinegar as a dip to break down and clean all of this stuff. But I don't remember if this is correct or if there is a special way to do this.
Could someone fill me in? Or if you have any other good ideas as too how to clean a powerhead.
Using a toothbrush and pipecleaner does not work to well.

Thanks,
CaptK
