    Question Uv Sterilizer

    Howdy all,

Would a UV sterilizer be a good addition, or not really necessary? Has anyone heard of health problems due to using it? Any info. would be great. I have a 85 gallon hex.

    Thanks

    Kelley

If your going with a reef tank I would say no. The UV will kill the good along with the bad.
I have never used one and have never had any problems. To keep parasites in check I had a few cleaner shrimp. Not only did they do a good job but they were fun to watch. I lost them during a power outage last winter and I will be putting at least one in my new tank in the next week or so.

    tech1,

This is still an area where there is an ongoing debate.

But to quote Dr. Ron, “I see no use for them in a reef tank and consider them highly detrimental in such systems.”
