Closed loop system
I must not have read enough posts as I seem to read a lot of posts regarding "closed loop systems" but I have yet to read one that explains to me just what it is. Curiosity is getting the better of me so I just though I would ask. Thanks.

rayjay,
Do a search here and you should find what your looking for. Have you ever used a canister filter? just think of a closed loop as you would a canister filter except you would hook the hose's to a pump instead of the canister. Water is drawn right from the tank through the pump back to the tank........ Mark |

Thanks! Sure seems like a lot of work and expense just to replace power heads that can be hidden for the most part.

it may cost a bit more but lets see you try to get 2000 gph out of hidden powerheads.

Well,I don't think I have need of 2000g/hr as I have an 1800g/hr return pump pumping though 1" dia poly hose for my sump return so little friction loss. I have 3 buried Hagen 802's, only one of which you can see a little of the top if looking down from above. I believe they are rated 400g/hr each. I also have a Hagen Pro 4 rated at 425g/hr which is exposed by choice but I can hide it if I wish. This is for a Hagen 90g tank housing soft corals and LPS corals.
Do you think I need more for a tank this size? Thanks again for answering.

Sounds like you have enough flow for anything you wish to keep. If you don't mind digging out the pumps to clean every so often then I wouls stick with what you have. You mentioned that the closed loop sounded like a lot of work. Its just the opposite, a closed loop is very easy to setup and needs a lot less care then a bunch powerheads. Its a matter of preference.

Rayjay, my closed loop is running my chller and a sea swirl. I also have 4 mj 1200's hidden behind the rocks and a mag 950 running from sump to another sea swirl.
My chiller is on the back patio which makes having a closed loop a must.
