overflows for 125
I will be getting a 125gal in the next couple weeks. it is six feet long, 18in deep not sure on height prob 22-24in. It does not have overflows
I will be having it drilled before I get it. My question is do you think I should go with Just one overflow box in the center or one at each corner? I think one in each corner will be best. I am planning on using the durso type stand pipe any one experience any downsides to using those? Also the tank im getting comes with a iwaki pump not sure of model right now,I think it pushes around 1200gph would this be adequate? one last question, the tank currently has 4 165 vho's I have 2 175w mh's that I think I will replace the center vho's with .Would it be a good idea to add a third 175w mh? or maybe a 250w in the center and the 175's on the outside? Sorry so many question in one post!I am upgrading my first reef tank which is a 72 gal bowfront has been up for about two years to this 125. I am very excited and want to set it up right the first time! Tia RWAG |

your tank will be 22 inches tall... i just got done setting my 125 a month ago. i had my overflwo put in the middle. i hate it. i wish i had one on the side.. the reason for me hating it is because the sump then sits right in the middle.. taking up all kinds of room.

Rwag,
I have a 135g w/ a single Durso overflow in the corner. It works well. My overflow is 2" in diameter and is "feeding" a Mag18(1800gph). The Mag in turn "feeds" 2 3/4" Seaswirls. IMO, I don't think you'll be happy w/ a 1200gph pump. I myself initially setup the tank w/ a Mag12(1200gph) and was very disappointed in the circulation...thus the upgrade to the 18. On a different note, the next two tanks I'm setting up(100g and 112g) I had drilled for 2 separate overflows, 1 in each corner. This way I will be able to "split" the flow through my refugiums. And yes, if you can, throw in a 3rd MH. Preferably a 250w. I run 3 250w MH supplemented w/ VHO's. HTH my friend. ![]()

Aragorn,
What exactly do you mean by splitting the flow through your refugiums? Do you have multiple refugiums per tank? Also what size is your overflow box in your 135? Also are you happy with your sea swirls ? Thanks Ryan Last edited by rwag; 01-11-2002 at 01:35 AM. |

im running a mag7 for my return and an ampmaster for my circlulation. i might upgrade the return pump to a 9.5.. i have two 400 watt mh's now. im going to go with three 250 watt mh's and my 2 140 vho atinics.

Rwag,
My next 2 tanks will incorporate a 20g refugium and 10g sump each. The 20g will be fed by 1 overflow and the 10g will be fed by the other. Additionally, the output of the 20g refugium will flow into the 10g. The output of the 10g sump will then return ALL the water back to the tank. I hope this makes sense. If not, I can email you a drawing if you'd like over the weekend. My overflow box in my 135g is 23hx10wx8d and my Durso is 2" diameter reduced to 1.5" at the bulkhead. As for the SS's...I LOVE'EM!!! I converted my 3 existing tanks to all SS's. They're the best(a little pricey though).

Thanks alot sounds like sea swqirls will be the way to go! Im not sure on the overflows, room under my tank will not be a issue. My sump and refugium will be behind my tank in another room for ease of access and quiet operation. Do you think in my case since room is not a problem that I should go with corner overflows? My current tank has a hang on overflow (boy will I miss that!)lol Thanks for all your suggestions!
