number of lbs for 4" DSB

I think I've read that it takes 11lbs of sand to cover 1 square foot, 1 inch deep. Is this accurate? If one was trying to cover a 4" DSB in a 180Gal 72x24 ... I come up with 528lbs of sand. This seems like too much. Can anyone help me here?

12 square feet X 11 lbs x 4 (deep) = 528lbs

Yes, I think that would be too much. Remember that not all sands weigh the same per cubic foot. The finer the grain, the heavier a cubic foot of the stuff will weigh. In general, you are looking at about 75-95 lbs per cubic foot for most sands.

Also, don't forget that you have two corner overflows that occupy space that doesn't need sand and that your tank interior dimensions are less than 72"x24" because of the thickness of the glass.

So, my out-of-thin-air estimate for your tank would be 350-lbs of fine grain sand. But why not get 400-lbs anyway? Or even 450 and make it a little deeper to start out with.

crikey, I forget to subtract the overflows. That sounds more reasonable. Thanks!

Well its going to take over 100 lbs to get 4"+ of ollite sand in my 37 gall 24x18 tank. I got carbisea and teh bags are 12x18 with 30 lbs and they arent even 2" thick.

I also have well over 150 lbs in my 125 gall tank and it is myabe 2" max at places. So I would go with the 450 for sure.
