using an old tank as a sump
Ok, this might be a really stupid question. I have an old 55 gallon glass aquarium that I'm thinking about using for a sump. My question is this. Do I have to be worried about "leftover" algae possibly contaminating my new tank?

Yes, you could use your tank as a sump, you should install some baffle plates too get rid of small air bubbles.
You should'nt worry abouyt poluting your tank unless theres ALOT of algea inside of the(soon to be) sump. If you want too be on the safe side you can clean it with alcohol.... Good luck!!! Thomas |

I've built sumps out of tanks before, that isn't the problem. I was just worried about the extra "nutrients" from a used tank. I've read so many negative things about using any harsh cleaners on tanks (that will leach into the water when you go to use it again) I've stayed away from them. Thanks.

ok. What is the best cleaning agent to use? Northman_with_reef suggested alcohol? like rubbing alcohol? thanks.

You can use a comercial aquarium cleanser or fil the tank with some tap water and scrubb it.
Thats what i do in my old tanks  . |
