Well I don't have any experience w/ the Ampmaster but I've read alot of good things about it from others on this board. Currently, I run exclusively Mag pumps and have had no problem with them(going on 2 years now). The Mags are inexpensive, quiet, and IMHO, reliable. I have 3 tanks online right now and have used everything from the Mag5 to the Mag18. The next tank I'm building(112g), I will try the Ampmaster. I've read your previous posts and will be responding soon(I'm in the middle of something right now), but I was wondering how big your sump is and what you anticipate for your "turnover" rate? HTH

aragorn~ what size tank did you use the mag5 on? do you think a mag5 would be an adequate return pump for a 46 gallon tank with a 20 gal sump?

    Brian,

When I first setup my 72g, I was sold a Mag5. I wasn't really happy with the throughput even then. Keep in mind that I was going FO. Since then, I've converted the 72g to "Reef" and have upgraded the return pump to a Mag12. If you're going to go w/ Mag's, Id probably get a Mag7 or even 9 depending on what critters I'd want in the tank. HTH

    Venaman,

The term "turnover" refers to the amount of water you circulate through your tank during a given period of time. Generally, one can rate it at the amount the return pump circulates the water, but one can compensate with powerheads and such.

The ratio of your sump capacity to your tank is excellent. If you plan on having any SPS corals(acropora) or other high current corals, I'd go with a pump rated for at least 900GPH. Keep in mind that the rated GPH for a pump does not mean one gets that. There are variables such as "head pressure"(height from pump to the return(s) outlet), diameter of intake and outlet etc.

Good point. I totally forgot that one. Thanks Mark. Depending on what you've got for overflows and what you'd like may limit you. If you have a hang-on overflow(like my 72g) you may need a larger one. I know that I had to upgrade to a dual overflow when I upgraded my pump.

We need to know how fast the water drains out of the tank into the sump...What is the GPH rating on your overflow\s?

    overflow

i dont have an overflow yet. .
i was gonna make one soon and just make it so that all the water that was pushed in from the sump to the tank by a pump, would be brought back in to the sump through the overflow

    is this wrong?

If you're going to have the sump/refugium below your main tank, the overflow(s) are the device(s) that take water from the main tank TO the sump. The return(s) take the water from the sump TO the main tank(usually via a return pump). Anyway, there are typically 2 types of overflows: Built-in and hang-on. The built-in either come with the tank or are made. This is typically done by drilling the glass and constructing some type of "box" around it/them. Water then flows into this "box", into the overflow tube, and then to the sump. The hang-on type is generally a purchased item(Amiracle, Lifereef, CPR makes them). You simply hang it on the tank, and water flows through that into the sump. I have both. If you opt for a hang-on, I have direct experience w/ CPR and Amiracle. I replaced the CPR with the Amiracle...no regrets. If you're going to go w/ a BIG pump(I run a Mag12) may I suggest a dual hang-on overflow? Here's a link to lifereefs offerings:
