How large of a sump...

How large of a sump should I get for a 125 Gal fish only? I'm not sure if i'll be able to keep caulerpa and sand type stuff in it since it will sit below the tank, and all the beneficial stuff would go through the pump propeller.

My recommendation is to always go for the biggest sump you can. The extra water volume is always great. As for the caulerpa/sand....I think its still a good idea to at leat have algae in the sump. It'll be a great nutrient export, breeding grounds/refugum for critters, and will be another aid to cutting the microbubbles in the system by slowing/impeding water flowing through the sump.

Justler, I second Perry's comments get the biggest sump you can! The space runs out quickly with skimmers, pumps, heater etc... I have 20 gallon sump on a 60 gallon reef tank. I have it sectioned into three chambers, first chamber is pvc pipe coming down from the overflow, the second chamber is the refugium (deep sand bed, live rock & macro, & of course critters amphipods, mysis /gammus etc) The third chamber has my skimmer and sump pump. The pods in my sump get to the main tank, some make it alive, and some don't but they are still feeding the main tank. I think you should incorporate a refugium into your sump if it all possible, just my 2 cents....

Cool,

Thanks guys... The main reason why I asked how big of a sump is because I have a 29 gallon already ready to go, it already has three partitions, but i'm concerned that this will not be large enough for a 125 gallon... Wish I would have kept my 55 gal tank!
