    I need your input

I'm in the middle of doing some spring cleaning. I removed my sump, calcium reactor, Nilsen reactor, Mag 12 return pump, Euro-reef skimmer.

Normally on a day like today my temps run 79.9 morning to 83.2 peaking when the Iwaskai goes off at 8pm. Today the temp peaked at 80.3. I was thinking it would have gone higher because of less water.......

Here are the pumps I took off line.

    Mag 12
    Maxi Jet 1200
    Mag2
    Sen 5000

    What are your thoughts?

i think that all together ,those pumps raise youre water temp by about three degrees

    like you didnt know that

which one gets the hottest to the touch?sen or the mag 12?

    Organic,
Sorry I didn't get back sooner. The problem is when the lights go out the temp drops to 80 and the heater comes on and keeps it there (heater is set at 80) I know the pumps add to the heat but even with them running the heater still come on. When the lights come on the temp goes up to 83-84.

Yesterday the temp was 81 when I started the break down, when I finished the temp was 80, the lights were on the whole time.

I'm going to move the Mag outside the sump when I put everything back today. I don't think the MJ or the Mag 2 add any noticeable heat. The Sen 5000 is only 50 watts so that's not going to raise the temp in a 190 gal system......

Mag pumps put out some heat. I had my mag 18 in my sump for my skimmer and when I took it out of the sump it droped my temp 1-2 degree's. Also I took the mag off my ca reactor and went with an Ehiem . It has cooled down also.

    Mark,

The heat is probably coming from the mag 12. I had a mag 9.5 plumbed externally once just to see how it ran and I didn't have any problems. Others have reported leaks around the seal. You have to wrap the threads well with teflon because they are a sloppy fit to PVC fittings. If you want to reduce heat why don't you go with a real pump (external only like Iwaki or GRI). IMPO mags are way over rated and are just another cheap submersible. Just out of curiosity you could try running things without the mag 12 but everything else including lights and see what you get for temps. If you can trim a couple of degrees by replacing your return pump I think that's worth looking into.

    Golfish,

How open is your sump cabinet when you're not working on it? If I keep the doors on my sump open, my tank doesn't get as hot. Also, how dry was it that day? Did you evaporate more water than usual?
