RO/DI System @ Home Depot

I spotted an RO/DI system @ h/d yesterday. It comes
with 4 canisters and a ultra violet sterilizer. Plus a set
of filters and a blue storage tank.

Would this be OK for my reef water???

It sells for $ 150

Thanks
Mortman

i have a premier ro system its currently on the shelf collecting dust, only because i needed to replace the inserts, and someone gave me a spectrapure ro/di so i started using that instead.
they use the same "inserts",an ro filter is an ro filter.
if you can add a di to it all the better.
but yeah,itll work

Send a message via ICQ to saltjunkie
I have been wondering about these systems myself, I always see them, then I think, naa, theymust have or do something different or we all wouldnt want expensive ones made especially for our reef tanks, I think I may go try one....

Careful what you are buying because most systems sold at Sears, HD, Lowes and the like do not have DI stages. It is generally considered not good for you (humans) to drink DI water. RO yes but not DI.

Good luck

YES, THAT IS THE ONE REEFER. THANKS FOR THE LINK.
THE ONE AT H/D DOES NOT COME WITH THE LIL MONITOR
BUT IT IS $75 BUCKS CHEAPER $150 vs. $225.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RO AND DI WATER??

Well there's a big difference between RO and RO/DI. RO water is simply prefiltered then passed thru the RO membrane. Estimates very but it removes like 90-95% of junk in the water. The RO/DI system takes the RO and filters it thru a resin chamber which removes all of the dissolved metals, phosphates, etc. 99+% pure.

Do some searchs on the forum for a better explaination. There are good reasons why all the Kent, Spectrapufe, AquaFX, Reefpure, etc are using RO/DI.

Pure rumor, I've never seen it substantiated. Never tried drinking it either!!

As I understand it, something aobut the complete lack of ions, and trace elements, makes it hard to digest. Don't know really.

Bryan over at AquaticReef Systems could probably tell you exactly why, but as he explained it to me, the only difference is that it'll taste stale since its nutrient poor......I said "Your kidding, so its the sh**t in the water that makes it taste good?"

well since its devoid of minerals and stuff-of course it has no flavor
probly how this rumor got started too-no minerals= not good for you?
maybe if you drank nothing but ,it might not be the best,im not sure-but i would say there is no way its "bad" for you.

organic,

http://watershed.net/mineral.htm#mainarticle

"There is a correlation between the consumption of soft water (purified water is extremely soft) and the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Cells, tissues and organs do not like to be dipped in acid and will do anything to buffer this acidity including the removal of minerals from the skeleton and the manufacture of bicarbonate in the blood. The longer one drinks purified water, the more likely the development of mineral deficiencies and an acid state."

Is this bad?

Water filtered through a solid charcoal filter is slightly alkaline. Ozonation of this charcoal filtered water is ideal for daily drinking. Longevity is associated with the regular consumption of hard water (high in minerals). Ionized Water is the best possible drinking water. Disease and early death is more likely to be seen with the long term drinking of purified water. Avoid it except in special circumstances.

Shrocat -

Okay, but if acidity is really a problem over the long run we better cut out most soft drinks, most fruit drinks and most other drinks. I may be wrong, but that's why they are only able to draw a correlation....just like most studies can be skewed to draw some correlation proving that persons theory. Until they show a cause and effect relationship, I wouldn't be too sure about their conclusions. But hey, I'm no MD and this is just MO. Oh but doesn't the polution in the air we breath these days make it acidic to our bodies also?

Top Ten Reasons Never To Consume Soft Drinks...

1. Soft drinks steal water from the body. They work very much like a diuretic which takes away more water than it provides to the body. Just to process the high levels of sugar in soft drinks steals a considerable amount of water from the body. To replace the water stolen by soft drinks, you need to drink 8-12 glasses of water for every one glass of soft drinks that you consume!

2. Soft Drinks never quench your thirst, certainly not your body's need for water. Constantly denying your body an adequate amount can lead to Chronic Cellular Dehydration, a condition that weakens your body at the cellular level. This, in turn, can lead to a weakened immune system and a plethora of diseases.

3. The elevated levels of phosphates in soft drinks leach vital minerals from your body. Soft Drinks are made with purified water that also leach vital minerals from your body. A severe lack of minerals can lead to Heart Disease (lack of magnesium), Osteoporosis (lack of calcium) and many other diseases. Most vitamins can not perform their function in the body without the presence of minerals.

4. Soft Drinks can remove rust from a car bumper or other metal surfaces. Imagine what it's doing to your digestive tract as well as the rest of your body.

5. The high amounts of sugar in Soft Drinks causes your pancreas to produce an abundance of insulin, which leads to a "sugar crash". Chronic elevation and depletion of sugar and insulin can lead to diabetes and other imbalance related diseases. This is particularly disruptive to growing children which can lead to life-long health problems.

6. Soft Drinks severely interfere with digestion. Caffeine and high amounts of sugar virtually shut down the digestive process. That means your body is essentially taking in NO nutrients from the food you may have just eaten, even that eaten hours earlier. Consumed with french-fries which can take WEEKS to digest, there is arguably nothing worse a person can put in their body.

7. Diet soft drinks contain Aspartame, which has been linked to depression, insomnia, neurological disease and a plethora of other illness. The FDA has received more than 10,000 consumer complaints about Aspartame, that's 80% of all complaints about food additives.

8. Soft Drinks are EXTREMELY acidic, so much so that they can eat through the liner of an aluminum can and leach aluminum from the can if it sits on the shelf too long. Alzheimer patients who have been autopsied ALL have high levels of aluminum in their brains. Heavy metals in the body can lead to many neurological and other diseases.

9. Soft Drinks are EXTREMELY acidic: The human body naturally exists at a pH of about 7.0. Soft Drinks have a pH of about 2.5, which means you are putting something into your body that is hundred of thousands of times more acidic that your body is! Diseases flourish in an acidic environment. Soft Drinks and other acidic food deposit acid waste in the body which accumulates over time in the joints and around the organs. For example, the Body pH of cancer or arthritis patients are always low. The sicker the person, the lower the Body pH.

10. Soft Drinks are the WORSE THING you can possibly put in your body. Don't even think of taking a sip of a Soft Drink when you are sick with a cold, flu or something worse. It will only make it that much harder for your body to fight the illness.

schrocat,thats complete hogwash
you sent me a link to basically an ad trying to sell me hard mineral water.right?
anyway, its definitely not a "fact" that ro water is at all bad for you..........a good ro filter is NSF approved, and they are supposed to regulate for ,among other things, public health.
what about using it to make coffee/juices....wait ...forget it schrocat -dont even want to here it

if you cant tell i do drink my ro water
certainly tastes a hell of alot better than what comes out of my tap,i have a copy of my water analysis from the county, there is alot of stuff in pittsburg water that shouldnt be there, according to federal guidelines.
and according to the link, the stuff in tap water is just as bad as the ro,apperantly the only safe water is theirs

dont worry for me though,i pretty much just use the ro water to make coffee and juice,
i usually drink soda
