Sump Pump

Hi All,
So, I am considering a sump. But I want it to be really simple. I would like to use a MaxiJet 1200 for returning water to the tank.
From the floor to the op of the tank it is about 45"
A MJ 1200 is rated for maximum flow of 1110 l/h or 295 g/h and a pumping height of 1.74 meters or 69 inches.
I have never seen anyone talk about using these PH/Pumps in a sump so maybe this is just a silly question. Would this work?

A second question:
Does the amount of water pushed by the pump to the tank dictate how much water goes from the tank down to the sump?
Note: I would not be able to drill my tank so Iwould use one of those hang-on type overflows.

And lastly would I be able to use plastic tubing instead of having to fit plastic pipes?

Thanks for the help.

Hey Cap

You dont have any SPS according to your profile, and im assuming you are talking about your 29g tank....First off the I would be surprised if a MJ had much flow after it travelled up 49" to your tank, and even if it does its not much, which goes to your statement

Yes that would be correct as long as your overflow can handle it, but im sure the overflow can.....my thought would be that it would be too low of flow and the siphon might break often. Im not sure though....when I had my 20gal reef tank up I never used a sump (but I always had plenty of macro sectioned off in the tank, kinda like a in tank refug). Unless you already have a sump lined up I wouldnt use one.....or wat you could do is make it a Refugium and set it beside the tank and do a gravity feed.

Sure Y Not! Just make sure your connections are good and tight or else they could slip off and flood the floor

I use to use a MJ 1200 for water changes and it will pump up that high but will only have maybe 50 GPH, not enough for a over flow box to work properly.

Scubadude had the best Idea with placeing a tank beside your 29 for a gravity feed refugium.
29 gallons are pretty small for tring to add a sump to. I had a 29 for 6 mounths with out a sump and was a great tank with no problems till I moved up to a larger tank.

Thanks guys, I guess I will set aside the thought of doing a sump. It was only a thought anyway.
I had tried to do a gravity fed refugium but it just would have not looked asthetically(sp??) pleasing so I canned that idea.

Thanks for the input
