Closed loops and/or Powerheads??

Hi, I'm getting ready to tear down the 75 gallon freshwater from a friend and change it to a reef system. I have never done a closed loop in any tank and would like to know how to successfully build/do one for this size tank. Also what are advantages of this versus a powerhead? And if I do a closed loop, will there be a need for a powerhead?

I want to do it right this time. My 80 gallon tank had a messy plumbing work

Thanks,

Elmo

Hey Elmo

The advantages of Closed loops over PH's is that you wont have a bunch of electrical components submerged in your water, which causes risk of shock to you and your animals, as well as the motors heating up the water, not to mention the looks of a bunch of PH's versus a couple of elbows just submerged. You could build a U tube for your intake then maybe have a SS or even regular elbows as your output.....the main theory behind Closed loops is so you wont have to put all that flow through your sump, especially if you have a refugium. If you havent already, check out this thread. HTH
