I just picked up my new 125 gal AGA with built in overflows today. I am now trying to finalize my plans for my return pump. I have gathered that i will only be able to push about 1100 or so gallons per hour through my built in overflows with Durso standpipes.
I am trying to figure out how to hit a 15x or 20x turnover rate. I plan on pushing this rate through (2) 1" Sea-Swirls and whatever pump i end up deciding on. Even though the SS units are kind of bulky, I really would like to stay away from having to clutter up the tank further with power heads. The next option that i have been thinking about it to use a hang-on overflow box in conjunction with the 2 built in overflows. This would give me that extra flow but it adds clutter and sort of defeats the whole point of having "built-in" overflows. I know that some sort of a closed loop setup makes sense but i just can't come to terms with drilling big nasty holes in the back of my brand new tank. Does anybody else use hang-on overflows with their built in ones? Any advise or experience on this would be a great help. Thanks. |

You can make a closed loop with out drilling holes in the tank.I used somones design from this site I can't recall who it was right now,but it is basically just a pump(like a Mag Drive)in one corner of the tank with just the intake under water and plum a couple of returns how ever you want.I will try to post a pic of mine On sunday.
Hope this helps |
