Dave,
Siliconing glass to the outside and inside won't really do much in the way of preventing any vents from running. If you did that and gave the area a good thunp where a vent was it would still run. Quite often at work the crane operators vent the bottom of blocks of glass and the vented piece may be 5 back from the front 5 or 6mm piece of glass in the pack. If I thump the front panel the vent still runs even with 25mm of glass in front of it. The silicon will make no difference in between the pieces of glass. It is actually the best place for a defect at the corner join as this area is under less stress than the middle portions of the panels with regard to bowing which will be the quickest to crack from a vent. Even laminated glass which is what I make will run a vent on one side of the makeup. I personally would be confident that all will be well with your tank after the thump test as long as you gave it some good strong whacks. Andy ![]() |

Dave,
That's good news mate. Let me know if anything happens around the area down the track. Gotta go now as the bloody kangaroo is pulling washing off the line and the koala is poking the saltwater croc with a stick in the backyard. . Bloody native animals.Andy |

Question for Glassman
Hopefully the Saltwater Croc ate the Kangaroo thats taking your laundry and left the koala alone..(grin)
But Seriously I have a starfire glass tank with two scallops(<1/8inch round) on the inside 5 inches from the bottom and about 6 inches from one side(5 ft tank)A rock hit when it fell during setup. The tank has been filled now for about 8 months. A friend of mine told me that this could get worse as time goes by. Is that so? Since its held 265 gallons of water for this long is it safe to assume it will hold? Is there anything I should watch for?I appreciate any input you may have.. Thanks Watch out for those venemous snakes... |

I was under the impression that a shell on the inside was much less "dangerous" then a shell on the outside....

Well being a Extremely poor wannabe reefer...............I got actual Saltwater flowing through this tank, after doing several test!!! I having been taking my time,I built the sump and the fuge myself out of acrylic. So far everything is holding pretty steady,I still get up in the middle of the night though worrying about the glass breaking
It has only been running for about 4 days now.My brother said the tank will hold fine for about a year then break when I get it the way I want it,truth be told that would be my luck.....lolBut I am getting really small and I mean very small mirco-bubbles being pumped back into the tank?Anyone got any advice on fixing that? David p.s. my brother can kiss me A$$ ![]() |

For bubble you either are getting to many bubble in the sump and tehy are making back the return pump which would mean you probably need another baffle
or You have a small pin hole leak some where in your return plumbing that is letting air get sucked in which would mean you need to make sure all your clamps are clamped good and and any pvc joints are glued tight.. |

tendar,
After searching around for a couple of days I might have found what is causing this.I have a mag-18 for a return pump and I had to hard plumb it,I have a straight pipe coming off the mag and going to a 45,all the plumbing up to that 45 is not glued together everything after that 45 is glued. The reason I did not glue that is so I could take the pump out for cleaning and what not.I really can't glue that pipe together.Do you think that might be causing the problem? I still have a wavemaker to put in this tank with 3 more powerheads,I was thinking that once that is installed I would'nt even notice the bubbles.Does that makes sense or do I need to try and fix the problem now? I just figure with 4 powerheads running those little bubbles would'nt stand a chance. Thank you very much for your help, David |

Ok, how did you fix it?
You should put a union somewhere in the return plumbing close to the pump so removing it for cleaning would be no problem.Glad to hear your tank is running and holding up. If it is running, I wouldn't think there would be any problems down the road with it. Scott Z. |

Ihad to do a couple of things to fix it.First I had to move the hose for the skimmer outlet,it was putting bubbles around the pump.Next thing I added some filter material,poly-filter type stuff around the last baffle where water overflows to the pump, that catches alot of the bigger bubbles.
I hope it holds up,it has been running with saltwater in it for about a week or so now.I am praying I can order 50lbs of rock for it this payday David |

I can only offer one more piece of advice. Go to one of the glass shops and ask them if you can buy a sander belt from them . They use the carborandum belts to seam the edges of glass( sand them down a bit to take the sharp edge off ) Sanding the edge also helps to eliminate any small defects , that under pressure could run. Then take the belt and sand the edge of the affected area. You can see the edge that isnt broken and feel it . Just make the area with the chip as smooth as that . For all the more that you are doing , and by hand , you could ask them for a used belt and they would probably give it to you.In my opinion (and experience) trying to fill the chip or patch with acrylic would just be a waste of time. Hope all works out for you.
