In 2003, separate aquariums in Baltimore, MD, and Washington, DC, joined as one “National Aquarium.” The National Aquarium venues together hold living collections that include more than 16,000 animals from more than 660 species of fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals living in award-winning, naturalistic habitats. The National Aquarium recently said it will close its Washington branch in the fall. It was announced Thursday that renovations at the Department of Commerce building that the aquarium has called home since 1932 make the move necessary. The impressive Cowfish is often regarded as not safe for reef tanks and even if aquarists are attracted to the charm these fish create in local fish stores, they are confused about if they will be able to take care of cowfish in their home tank. They are not so difficult to handle as people usually fear. The Longhorn Cowfish inhabit the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, usually in the less turbid waters. The body is tan to yellow and covered with white and blue dots, and is occasionally referred to as the Yellow Boxfish; however, the Longhorn is not to be confused with Ostracion cubicus, commonly called the Yellow or Polka Dot Boxfish. Texas A&M has installed a new 300 gallon saltwater aquarium on the lower level of the university's Texas A&M Memorial Student Center. The 300-gallon saltwater aquarium is an Earth Day gift to the Brazos Valley from the Texas Sea Grant College Program at Texas A&M and has been installed on the lower level of the Memorial Student Center (MSC) beneath the Memory Cloud living sculpture.
